What Are Calibration Targets?

Calibration targets are highly accurate, robust sign boards designed for the calibration process of imaging systems for machine and computer vision applications. Our calibration targets are produced using two types of materials: ACM (Dibond) and Polyurethane. Both materials are lightweight, ultra-flat, rigid, and highly durable, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. ACM is composed of two metal panels that are sandwiched together with a black polyurethane core. It is available in 3mm or 6mm thicknesses. Polyurethane, on the other hand, is a solid compressed foam board that has an ultra-matte surface and is available in 3mm, 6mm, and 12mm thicknesses. It is best used in environments with high lighting or when vision systems includes various light sources. The ultra-matte surface finish of polyurethane makes it easier to detect in machine vision pipelines. Finishing options for our calibration targets include the following:

  • Rounded corners (ease of use when handling larger targets).
  • Special cuts (cut-to-shape).
  • Single or double-sided printing.

We offer a wide range of custom sizes to accommodate large or small fields of view with a highly accurate manufacturing tolerance of .004". We digitally print your target at 1000DPI with vibrant UV inks using direct printing process. The UV inks produces smooth, rich, authentic colors that are weather-resistant and will stand the test of time.

Calibration targets are vital in testing and adjusting the color responsiveness of a device. While calibration targets may not be as crucial for vision systems as lenses, vision software, cameras, or illuminations, they are essential in providing more accurate results in computer vision applications.

A vision system's overall calibration accuracy relies on all components involved and the total of their errors. The level of precision can rise with excellent optical system calibration. To achieve the best calibration results, you must start with high-quality calibration targets when dealing with a vision system. Let's detail what calibration targets are and why you need one.

What Is a Calibration Board?

A calibration board is a physical object consisting of a specified calibration pattern whose function is to act as a standard in the precise measurements and adjustment of the color responsiveness of instruments. The process requires very high accuracy to enable transformation generation with similar precision.

Machine vision applications typically need high correctness in measurement and alignment. Some robot guidance and 3D fields utilize the 2D sensor image to form 3D and robot coordinates.

Nevertheless, physical unit measurements, like in millimeters, may need a transformation of the coordinates of the distorted object in measures with accurate results. For example: include volume or size measurements, robot guidance, 3D reconstruction, and photogrammetry.

However, such requirements involve some calibration images as seen by your camera and reality. Therefore, we have to calculate a transformation using a geometrical model, and this is where the calibration targets come to play.

The color space serving as the reference is the calibration target, whereas the calibration source is the device undergoing the test. Color calibration is a necessity for devices actively involved in a color-managed workflow. Its application is widespread in many industries, including television production, photography, gaming, engineering, medical imaging, chemistry, etc.

Why Do You Need Calibration Targets?

As the previous section shows, high-accuracy measurement or alignment systems need camera calibration to offer optimal results. Distortions always exist in lenses, whether they function as telecentric or otherwise.

Besides the usual cushion and barrel distortion, the camera's construction may not be parallel to a scene, or failure of coinciding between the lens and camera can result in keystone distortion. However, a calibration target can help calculate extrinsic and intrinsic transformations.

For instance, if a manufacturer provides a 0.1% optical distortion for a telecentric lens and captures an image with a 100mm viewing field, we can calculate a 0.1mm error in the fringing field. Such an error is acceptable for multiple-component systems. However, we can utilize a target we used to calibrate and rectify the measurement and eliminate the error. That is where a high-accuracy system is different from a low-accuracy one.

For example, if you are using the camera to take pictures of plants, it would be necessary to reproduce colors accurately so that when people look at your images, they see what you saw. To do this, you need to use a calibration target with known colors and set up your shot to align with the targets on the screen.
